With evidence now indicating that 1 in 7 Australian men experiences Depression or Anxiety, or both, finding ways to remain healthy and active are of great importance. Suicide is the leading cause of death for males aged 15-44, with men three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Being active is one of the best ways for men to remain healthy, both physically and mentally. Evidence has found that participating in regular exercise was associated with a reduced incidence of future Depression. The primary proactive effect occurred at low levels of exercise, regardless of intensity. That means if you only get out for a ride on your bike or a walk once a week to go to the local café, it is beneficial for your mental health.
With Movember being the month of the moustache, Movember sees Australia rally together to raise awareness and funds to support men’s health issues including mental illness and Prostate and Testicular cancer. More than half of Aussie men are not getting in the minimum amount of the recommended levels of physical activity each week.
Exercise decreases the risk of, and helps manage, mental health conditions and other chronic health conditions such as Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.
So, whatever your preferred mode of physical activity is, get moving in some way. The Euro Cycle Tours team will be heading out for a spin on our bikes with our mates to the local café for our caffeine fix for sure this month.
All the best from the Euro Cycles Tour team.
